A ROOF IN FRONT OF ST. PETER’S BASILICA
We replaced an unsafe existing rood structure with a new steel-and-glass structure on the terrace of a residential building on Via Ottaviano, at the corner of Via Cola di Rienzo in Rome, directly opposite St Peter’s Basilica. The canopy features clean, essential lines, with opaque safety glazing and treated, painted steel.
The structure was designed with a tubular steel perimeter base and inclined uprights anchored to the base, forming a truncated pyramid. Frames housed within the main uprights support the glazing.
Steel elements were galvanised and hot-dip painted. A light grey finish was chosen to harmonise with existing antenna uprights on the terrace. The entire structure is bolted—both primary and secondary elements—and glazing seals were specified for rainwater tightness.
The glazing is Visarm and opaque, primarily to conceal dirt from internal views. An anchorage point was installed at the top to allow safe access for maintenance. Overall, the structure has a light visual impact and sits comfortably within the context.
We carried out the works with our technical studio ING. GABRIELE D’AMORE for design, structural calculations and permits, and our company AGL D’AMORE S.R.L. for delivery. The project took a total of two months.
