A CONSERVATIVE RESTORATION OF A BUILDING IN THE JEWISH GHETTO
We carried out the conservative restoration of a residential building located opposite the synagogue in Rome’s Jewish Ghetto, one of the oldest in the world. The building occupies a prominent corner position between Via Catalana and Via Portico d’Ottavia, facing the Tiber embankment. The façade works restored the building’s original appearance.
Constructed in the early 1900s, the building had never undergone maintenance. After more than a century of exposure to weathering and urban pollution, it presented extensive plaster detachment and deterioration of decorative elements, significantly compromising its appearance.
The restoration was carried out under the close supervision of the Capitoline Superintendency and followed a conservative approach. Works included the comprehensive restoration of façades, cornices, decorative elements and friezes, using exclusively pure lime-based materials without cement additives. The final colour was determined through stratigraphic testing to identify the original tone. The natural stone at the base of the building was carefully treated to restore its original condition. The goal was to return the building to its former dignity while preserving its historic identity.
The design, permitting and execution phases were managed respectively by our technical studio ING. GABRIELE D’AMORE and our construction company AGL D’AMORE S.R.L. The total duration of the intervention was eight months.
